The Department of Defense includes every aspect of contaminants found within commercial and industrial use plus military specific applications. The DoD runs more nuclear reactors that anyone else in the United States. Their responsibilities cover a wide range of activities from manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, heavy industry, hazardous-chemical and toxic industrial chemical remediation, general clean-up, preventive maintenance, nuclear biological and chemical response services, and a host of other activities too numerous to list.
Because DeconGel® can be used for radiological and chemical decontamination it can be used in almost every application faced by the military. As an example, DeconGel® 1102 was developed specifically for oil and grease decontamination in marine environments to ensure superior paint adhesion to metal surfaces. 1102 can be far superior to solvent based cleaning methods when preparing metal surfaces for corrosion inhibiting paints.
DeconGel® 1101 can be used to decontaminate vehicles, aircraft, ships, and other systems involved in NBC operations, used to restore buildings contaminated with lead, silica or other contaminants, to clean weapon systems or sensitive electronics contaminated with fine dust or other particulates, or removing heavy metal contaminants in industrial locations. DeconGel® can be used to remove contaminants such as coper, TBT, and other heavy metals found in shipbuilding sites like dry docks and shipyards. DeconGel® was used at a military hospital to decontaminate areas used in treating nuclear medicine patients and for cleaning up mercury contamination.
At CBI Polymers we believe DeconGel® is also a viable option for use in Radiological Dispersal Devices (RDD) decontamination also known as "dirty bombs." RDD events are designed to disrupt and economically cripple nations by shutting down operations in transportation, financial or commerce related activities. The key to an RDD event is rapid (less than 18 hours) containment of the area and removal of radiological isotopes from streets, sidewalks, buildings, and other materials from the affected area.
The most common and most disruptive method for decontamination is the complete demolition and removal of contaminated sources. Such actions may be unpalatable to a nation should they see cherished national treasures and monuments demolished and hauled away. DeconGel® may be a viable alternative to such methods and avert or greatly reduce the costs associated with cleanup, and avert the crippling costs associated with demolition, and rebuilding with the associated downtime of such actions.
